Be careful when choosing colors as you remodel. What may look fresh and fashionable this year is likely to become an eyesore to you, or future buyers, a few years down the road. (Many homeowners are still trying to eradicate avocado, harvest gold and Band-Aid pink from their bathrooms and kitchens.)
Use neutral colors (shades of white, off-white, beige and gray) for permanent items that would be costly to replace, such as carpeting, tile, countertops, exterior siding and appliances. You can create your own style and color scheme around those neutral tones using wall colors, furniture and fabrics.
