The saying "every penny counts" can mean a lot when those pennies add up. Here are some simple ways to save a little bit of energy (and some cash) all around your home.
Appliances
Install a programmable thermostat to adjust your home temperature automatically up and down according to the season and your family's schedule.
Turn down your water heater's temperature.
Don't buy (or renew) extended warranties for appliances.
Get rid of the second refrigerator. Appliances 10 years or older use considerably more energy than current models. Find a newer appliance to replace an old one if you can't live without it.
Lawn and Yard
Investigate using landscape plants that are native to your area. They'll require less water and less maintenance.
Design your landscaping to incorporate more perennial plants (those that come back every year).
Install rain barrels below downspouts to use for watering your plants and grass during dry spells.
Plant a tree to shade your home.
If you have a yard, consider building a compost pile. The kitchen waste you add to the pile means less going down your disposal, saving both electricity and water.
Lifestyle
Cut down the length (and temperature) of your shower, even if just a little. Install low-flow showerheads to save even more water.
Turn off the faucet when brushing teeth, lathering your hands, shaving or washing your face.
Close window coverings during full-sun exposure in the summer to keep things cooler. (Open completely during full-sun exposure in the winter.)
Keep a stack of printer-paper rejects and use these one-sided sheets for printing rough drafts, grocery lists or kids' scribbles.
Increase the deductible on your home insurance to save on your yearly premium.
